For those whose cream isn't enough — what's needed before the "seal"

CONCERN-FIRST GUIDE Skin Concern Guide

You're using a rich cream but skin still feels dry. Use a heavier one?

Before that, know this: cream's "sealing" function alone cannot provide fundamental hydration.

Why cream is just a "seal"

Most creams are primarily oils (petrolatum, mineral oil, plant oils). They create an oil film to physically block evaporation. But they don't supply moisture itself. Like putting a lid on a leaky bucket — if there are holes (barrier gaps), water still seeps out.

Three mechanisms of moisturization

1. Emollient (seal) — Oil covers surface to prevent evaporation. → Cream's main role.

2. Humectant (attract) — Draws and holds moisture. → Hyaluronic acid, glycerin.

3. Barrier repair (restore) — Repairs stratum corneum structure for fundamental moisture retention. → Ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids.

Cream alone only covers #1. All three together achieve true hydration.

What you can do today

1. Use ceramide serum before cream — Repair the wall before sealing.

2. Check for humectants — Cream with hyaluronic acid or glycerin is more effective.

3. Choose by ingredients, not "heaviness" — Texture weight doesn't equal hydration power. Lightweight but effective formulas exist.
