Choosing your first serum — what criteria to use

DECISION GUIDE Decision Guide

"I want to try a serum but don't know what to choose." This is the first barrier when stepping up your skincare.

Here are the criteria for avoiding first-serum mistakes.

How serums differ from toner

Toner is mostly water. Serums are "intensive care" items with active ingredients at higher concentrations. They target specific concerns with precision.

Three criteria for your first serum

Criterion 1: Work backward from your concern — Identify your primary concern. Dryness → ceramide-based. Dullness → vitamin C. Firmness → peptides. Products focused on one concern outperform "do-it-all" claims.

Criterion 2: Choose products that disclose concentrations — With concentration info, you can judge whether it's at effective levels. Brands that don't disclose leave you guessing.

Criterion 3: Start with barrier care — If unsure, start with ceramides or panthenol. Every skin type needs a "defense" foundation. Active treatments come after the foundation is set.

How NOT to choose

× By price alone — Expensive ≠ good. × By packaging design — Contents and container are unrelated. × By reviews alone — Every skin is different. Others' experiences are reference only.

Your first serum is also an "experiment" in knowing your skin. Try one, use it for 2-3 months, observe results. This cycle ultimately leads to the right skincare for you.
