In short · TL;DR
Category
Plant Extracts
Effect
An extract of dill, a herb of the Apiaceae family. Studied for the purpose of giving firmness to the skin
Concentration
The human study used a formulation containing 1% of the extract (Int J Cosmet Sci 2011). No public survey data on typical use levels has been confirmed
Effect
An extract of dill, a herb of the Apiaceae family. Studied for the purpose of giving firmness to the skin
Mechanism
The starting point is a report that mRNA and protein levels of LOXL (a lysyl oxidase-like enzyme involved in cross-linking elastic fibres) increased in cultured human fibroblasts. In dermis equivalents, 1% of the extract raised lateral elasticity by +29% versus untreated (p<0.01). Other work reported preservation of the elastic fibre network after elastase treatment and increased gene expression of elafin (PI3), an endogenous elastase inhibitor, in culture and in mice
Typical concentration
The human study used a formulation containing 1% of the extract (Int J Cosmet Sci 2011). No public survey data on typical use levels has been confirmed
Onset
In the placebo-controlled human study, instrumental firmness and elastic recovery were assessed at 56 days and wrinkle area and length at 84 days
Cautions
A plant of the Apiaceae family; take care if allergic to that family. The Japanese labelling name defines the extract as being from the whole plant, whereas the material used in the human study is described as a seed extract carrying the same INCI name, so the plant part may differ. All studies were conducted by researchers at ingredient or cosmetic companies. It is a different ingredient from dill seed oil, which is an essential oil
