The real cause of recurring breakouts — why "keeping clean" isn't the solution

CONCERN-FIRST GUIDE Skin Concern Guide

You cleanse thoroughly, yet acne persists. Breakouts keep returning. "I need to be cleaner" — so you wash more?

Actually, "keeping clean" may be making your acne worse.

How acne actually forms

Acne isn't simply "dirt." Four factors intertwine: excess sebum, abnormal keratinization (clogged pores), bacterial proliferation, and inflammation. Attacking just one doesn't solve the root problem.

The over-cleansing vicious cycle

Excessive cleansing strips sebum and destroys barrier function. Skin then judges "not enough protection" and produces even more sebum. Pores clog more easily; acne worsens. The more you wash, the worse it gets.

Skin microbiome balance

About 1,000 species of bacteria live on your skin forming a protective ecosystem. Harsh antibacterial cleansers kill beneficial bacteria too, disrupting the balance.

What you can do today

1. Cleanse max twice daily — Gentle cleansers, no scrubbing. Morning lukewarm water is sufficient.

2. Prioritize barrier repair and moisturizing — Even acne-prone skin needs moisture. Choose low-oil, ceramide-containing products.

3. Don't touch — Touching acne worsens inflammation and is the #1 cause of scarring.

Recurring breakouts are a "balance" problem, not a "cleanliness" problem. Restoring barrier function and microbiome balance is the path to resolution.
