Why your skin is dry even in summer — the science of sweating without hydrating

CONCERN-FIRST GUIDE Skin Concern Guide

"Summer means sweating, so no need to moisturize." Think again. Dermatologists increasingly warn that summer is prime time for "hidden dehydration".

Three factors threatening summer skin

1. UV barrier damage — UVB damages epidermis; UVA degrades dermal collagen. Barrier weakens, moisture escapes more easily.

2. Air conditioning drops humidity — Indoor humidity can fall to 30-40%, pulling moisture from skin. Sometimes drier than winter offices.

3. Sweat evaporation takes skin moisture — When sweat evaporates, it takes skin moisture with it (trans-epidermal water loss). Post-sweat skin is actually drier than before.

"Oily = hydrated" is a misconception

Summer oiliness is mainly a mix of sebum and sweat, unrelated to internal moisture levels. Surface is oily while inside is dry — "inner dryness" peaks in summer.

Summer moisturizing strategy

1. Sunscreen first — Cut off barrier damage at the source.

2. Change texture, keep ingredients — Switch heavy cream to gel, but ceramides and hyaluronic acid remain essential.

3. Water-only mists can backfire — Pure water mists pull skin moisture when evaporating. Choose ones with humectants.

Summer skin needs extra attention to invisible dehydration.
