Skincare Basics
Toner, serum, moisturizer, cream — you've assembled all the products, but you're not quite seeing results. Sound familiar? Perhaps the issue lies in the order you're using them.
There is a scientific reason behind the order of skincare steps. Rather than applying products haphazardly, understanding "why this order" can dramatically improve the effectiveness of your daily routine.
The basic skincare order is: Cleansing Oil/Balm → Face Wash → Toner → Serum → Moisturizer (or Cream) → Sunscreen (morning only). The fundamental principle is "water-based → oil-based." From lighter, smaller molecules to heavier, richer ones — this order maximizes absorption efficiency. If you apply an oil-rich cream first, the toner or serum applied afterward will be blocked by the oil film and won't reach the skin effectively.
After cleansing, the skin is clean but also stripped of moisture. The role of toner is to replenish moisture to the stratum corneum and help the next serum absorb better. Think of it like soaking a dry sponge with water. When toner is properly applied, the active ingredients in your serum can penetrate the skin more easily. Skipping toner and applying serum directly is like sowing seeds on dry ground.
Among all skincare steps, the serum contains the highest concentration of the ingredients you most want to work. Vitamin C, niacinamide, retinol — active ingredients tailored to your specific concerns are formulated at high concentrations. By applying serum to toner-prepared skin, ingredients are delivered efficiently to the stratum corneum. If using multiple serums, the key is to apply them from lightest texture (most watery) to heaviest (most viscous).
The role of moisturizer or cream is to lock in the moisture and active ingredients delivered by toner and serum. Oil-containing moisturizers and creams create a thin film on the skin surface, preventing moisture evaporation. Some people dislike moisturizers because they feel sticky, but skipping this step allows all the moisture you've replenished to escape. There are light gel-type moisturizers available too, so choose one that matches your texture preference.
Here are some surprisingly common mistakes. First, waiting too long after cleansing. Moisture evaporates rapidly after washing, so apply toner as soon as possible. Next, slapping toner onto your face aggressively. Harsh patting can damage the skin — gentle pressing with your palms is best. And applying sunscreen before moisturizer. Sunscreen should be the last step of skincare, before makeup. Simply following the correct order can maximize the potential of the products you already have.
