Ingredient Encyclopedia Expanded to 342 Entries

KAIAN has added 18 ingredients to its encyclopedia and corrected two existing entries, bringing the total to 342 ingredients. We have also changed how each page communicates the state of the evidence behind it.

What was added

The 18 new entries break down as follows.

A new "No published data" notice

For some ingredients, public regulatory databases give a definition and a registered function, but no published study data exists on how the ingredient acts on the skin. Until now, such ingredients appeared in the same format as ingredients supported by human studies.

From now on, pages where we searched the primary sources and found nothing say so explicitly. The concentration and time-to-effect fields are left as "could not be confirmed" rather than filled in by inference.

What is not yet known is also information you can use when choosing an ingredient.

Two existing pages corrected

During this review we found two pages whose cited source did not support what the page said. We are reporting this as a matter of fact.

  • Plant Stem Cell Culture Media The cited paper covered Centella asiatica in general and did not address this ingredient (Centella Asiatica Callus Conditioned Media). The heading now uses the labelling name, and the text has been reduced to the definition and registered function we could confirm.
  • Plant-Derived Extracellular Vesicles The labelling name is "Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Extract", but the description was that of a different ingredient, the vesicles. The two are now separate pages, each written to its own definition.

In both cases, figures we could not source have been removed.

How we check

For each ingredient we query, directly: the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association's list of cosmetic ingredient labelling names, the European Commission's CosIng database, PubChem, PubMed, and final reports from the US Cosmetic Ingredient Review. Secondary summaries and raw-material sales pages are not used as sources.
